How to Get More Google Reviews as a Plumber in South Africa

When a geyser bursts or a drain blocks at night, most people do the same thing: they search "plumber near me" and call one of the first few businesses they see. Before they call, they look at the stars and read a few reviews. For a plumber, that quick look is often what decides who gets the job.

Reviews also help you get seen in the first place. Google says review count and score are factored into local search rankings. More good reviews help you get chosen and help you get found.

Here is a practical way to collect more of them, step by step.

1. Start with a complete Google Business Profile

Customers can only review you if you have a profile. Make sure yours is claimed and accurate: your business name, phone number, the areas you serve, your hours and the services you offer. A complete profile also looks more trustworthy to the people reading your reviews.

2. Get your direct review link

Inside your Google Business Profile there is an option to ask for reviews. It gives you a link that opens the review box straight away, so customers do not have to search for your business first. The link usually starts with g.page/r/. Open it on your own phone to test it before you share it with anyone.

3. Ask at the right moment

The best time is straight after the job, when the leak has stopped or the hot water is back and the customer is relieved. Ask in person, then send the link while you are still there or later that day. A customer is more likely to write a review the same day than weeks later, when the job has faded from their mind.

What to say in person

"I'm glad that's sorted. If you're happy with the work, would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? I'll send you the link now."

4. Send the link by WhatsApp or SMS

Most customers will answer a WhatsApp message or SMS sooner than an email. Keep the message short, use their name and include the link.

Message to send

"Hi [Name], thanks for choosing [Business] today. If you're happy with the work, would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? It takes about a minute and helps other homeowners find a plumber they can trust: [link]"

One gentle reminder, a few days later

"Hi [Name], just a quick reminder in case you have a minute to review us on Google: [link]. Thank you!"

5. Make it easy for the customer

  • Send one link that opens the review box directly.
  • Remember that customers need a Google account to leave a review.
  • Tell them it only takes about a minute.
  • If they like, they can mention the job and the suburb, in their own words. Never write the review for them.
  • Send one reminder at most. Asking again and again puts people off.

6. Know what Google does not allow

Getting reviews the wrong way can get them removed, or worse. Google's policies do not allow you to:

  • Offer money, discounts, gifts or free work in return for a review.
  • Ask only your happy customers, or steer unhappy ones away from the review page. This is often called review gating.
  • Write reviews for your own business, or ask friends, family or staff to do it.
  • Buy reviews or use a service that sells them.

The safe rule: ask every customer, in the same way, and let them write what they honestly think.

7. Reply to every review

Replying shows future customers that you pay attention. Thank the customer by name, mention the job briefly and keep it short.

Replying to a good review

"Thank you, [Name]! We're glad the geyser is sorted, and we appreciate you taking the time to review us."

Do not panic over a bad review. Stay calm, thank them for the feedback, do not argue and do not share private details. Offer to put things right and move the conversation off the page.

Replying to a bad review

"Hi [Name], we're sorry the visit did not meet your expectations. We would like to put this right. Please call us on [number] so we can look into it."

If a review is fake, abusive or breaks Google's rules, you can report it to Google for removal. You cannot delete a review just because you disagree with it.

8. Make it a habit

One review drive will not help for long. What works is a routine you follow on every job:

  1. Finish the job and check the customer is happy.
  2. Ask for a review in person.
  3. Send the link by WhatsApp or SMS the same day.
  4. Send one reminder a few days later if they have not replied.
  5. Reply to each new review within a day or two.

You can also put your review link in your WhatsApp profile, on your invoices and in your email signature.

9. Let it run automatically

The hardest part is doing it every single time when you are busy on site. That is why Omniconverse built the 5-Star Reputation Booster: it sends a friendly review request to each customer automatically after a job, with a direct link to your Google profile, so you never have to remember.

Want review requests to go out on their own?

The 5-Star Reputation Booster asks your customers for a Google review after every job, so your best work becomes proof the next customer can see.
